A Health Information Technologist performs medical hospital billing and coding, medical transcription, front office and customer service duties, employs Microsoft Office applications, and has a thorough understanding of Anatomy and Physiology.

Health Information Technologist duties can include:

  • Using computers to run spreadsheets, word processing, accounting software programs, and administrative duties.
  • Working with patients on the phone and in person.
  • Dictation, working with the patient record, billing, insurance, and coding.
  • Understanding and working with medical terminology, pathophysiology and anatomy and physiology.
  • Assisting the physician during the examination.

Essential personal qualities for this field are:

  • Visual acuity and manual dexterity
  • Communication and reading comprehension skills
  • Attention to detail and the ability for calm and reasoned judgements
  • Must also be flexible, demonstrate ethical, moral principles
  • Maintain confidentiality of patient information, and an understanding of government regulations
