What's a Health Information Technologist?
A Health Information Technologist performs medical hospital billing and coding, medical transcription, front office and customer service duties, employs Microsoft Office applications, and has a thorough understanding of Anatomy and Physiology.
Health Information Technologist duties can include:
- Using computers to run spreadsheets, word processing, accounting software programs, and administrative duties.
- Working with patients on the phone and in person.
- Dictation, working with the patient record, billing, insurance, and coding.
- Understanding and working with medical terminology, pathophysiology and anatomy and physiology.
- Assisting the physician during the examination.
Essential personal qualities for this field are:
- Visual acuity and manual dexterity
- Communication and reading comprehension skills
- Attention to detail and the ability for calm and reasoned judgements
- Must also be flexible, demonstrate ethical, moral principles
- Maintain confidentiality of patient information, and an understanding of government regulations
