Some environments may be very hot or cold, and working in cramped spaces may be common. With the large variety of elements, there are different tools you’ll need for the different jobs.
Common Tools Used by HVAC/R Technicians
HVAC/R Technicians may use any of the following tools for proper service delivery:
- Vacuum Pump
This is a tool used for the maintenance and repair of air conditioning systems. The vacuum can suck air and moisture out of the conditioning lines. It is essential for determining the lines that have ever leaked before you charge the conditioning system with a refrigerant.
- Voltage Tester and Multi-Meter
All HVAC systems are connected to electricity. This means safety measures should be put in place when handling the systems. The multi-meter and voltage tester are used to measure voltage, verify the presence of live wires and measure resistance. Failing to check for the presence of naked wires endangers the life of HVAC technicians.
- Pliers and Pipe Wrenches
These tools are used by HVAC experts when handling systems related to natural gas line and even plumbing. HVAC technicians require pliers like wire strippers and needle-nose for small connections.
- Cordless Drill
This tool is essential for HVAC services. It is used to drill holes for HVAC connections. Every HVAC technician should be equipped with a cordless drill along with two batteries to avoid time-wasting for charging the tool.
- Refrigerant Scale
This is used when charging the air conditioning system with a refrigerant. It is used to measure the weight of the refrigerant removed or added to the compressor of the unit.
- Screwdrivers
Every HVAC technician require screwdrivers with insulated handles. You should have both Philips and Flathead screwdrivers to open various equipment that needs HVAC service. Having screwdrivers with insulated handles reduces the risk of electrical shock.
- Shears and Tin Snips
These are tools for the manipulation of metal sheets. There are three types of tin snips, and they include rights, lefts and straight aviators. They allow for different positioning and direction for cutting metal sheets.
Other Tools Used by HVAC/R Technicians
- Jumper wire
- Refrigerant wrench
- Scratch awls
- Crimpers
- Swaging kit
- Sheet metal scribe
- Straight seamers
- Reamer
- Tape measure
- Pipe wrench
- Hex key set
