Facility Maintenance Program

A Facility Maintenance Technician is someone who conducts repairs and general maintenance on property structures and facility equipment. Becoming a facility maintenance technician involves being skilled in a variety of fields, such as plumbing, electrical work, welding and HVAC maintenance. Career College of Northern Nevada (CCNN) offers a Facility Maintenance Technician program that can be completed in as few as 19.5 months and upon completion of this program, the student receives an Associate of Occupational Study Degree in Facility Maintenance Technician.

Responsibilities of a Facility Maintenance Technician

Facility maintenance technicians’ responsibilities can vary depending on the business and size of the facility. The smaller facilities may have one maintenance technician that is a jack-of-all-trades. They often take care of everything from janitorial duties and supply management to basic repairs. Larger corporations may have numerous maintenance technicians who specialize in certain areas.

Many technicians complete work orders throughout the day. This may include repair requests on equipment, preventative maintenance tasks and inspections. Some maintenance technicians spend their day handling emergency calls and putting out “fires.”

Essential Skills

Although these maintenance technicians can work in a variety of fields, there are essential soft skills every technician should have.

1. Problem Solving

Throughout the day, maintenance technicians are often faced with problem after problem. They must be able to identify the issue, diagnose the cause, develop a solution, and execute the solution. The sign of a great facility maintenance technician is their ability to remain calm under pressure. They should also have the ability to prioritize the most important tasks without neglecting the smaller issues.

2. Attention to Detail

The ability to identify small problems before they become a large one is essential for any facility maintenance technician. Understanding the inner workings of an electrical circuit and identifying each tiny part that makes an HVAC system run properly requires them to be extremely detail-oriented.

3. Versatility

This may seem obvious, but facility maintenance technicians are required to be versatile. Becoming a great facility maintenance technician often means you’re skilled in electrical wiring, plumbing, HVAC systems, a building’s external support structure, heating and cooling, ventilation, welding and much more.

Job Outlook

The Bureau of Labor Statistics states that employment is projected to grow 5% from 2018 to 2028. The need to keep increasingly sophisticated machinery functioning and efficient will continue to create demand for these workers. As of May 2019, the median pay for these workers is $52,860 across the U.S. and Nevada’s annual mean wage is $56,450.
