What is Information Technology?

Information Technology is a relatively new term that has come to replace older language, like “computer science.” Information Technology (IT) is the development and maintenance of computer software, hardware, and networks. Hardware is the physical aspects of a computer system: the monitor, a mouse, or a printer, for example. It also includes the physical parts that are inside, like a motherboard or the hard drive. Software is not something you can touch; it is the programs within a computer. Finally, the network refers to the group of computer systems and hardware that communicate with each other. An IT specialist could work with any or all these components.

Why is IT important?

We are surrounded. Everything we encounter involves information technology in one way or another. We use computers at work, school, and home. We use our cell phones to interact with the outside world via social media and messaging. This is all IT. Our world wouldn’t be as efficient and ‘user-friendly’ if it weren’t for our IT Specialists and it’s not going anywhere any time soon. According to Bureau of Labor Statistics, Computer and Information Technology occupations are projected to grow 12% from 2018-2028 (much faster than the average for all occupations) and it’s projected 562,200 new jobs will be added. Information Technology Specialists work with the IT systems that drive modern enterprise.

IT Career Opportunities

So, you’re sold on the idea that Information Technology is a good fit for you. But what types of jobs can an IT degree get you? Businesses employ IT specialists for a variety of positions and there are many career options because of the diversity of systems and tasks that exist in the world of IT:

  • Computer Support Specialists
  • Information Security Analysts
  • Web Site Development
  • Programming
  • Cyber Security
  • Network Systems Administrator

What skills are employers looking for?

The incredible instructors at CCNN will teach you the technical skills you need for any Information Technology position; however, soft skills are also important – though not a requirement and can be learned. Here is a brief list of soft skills that will launch your IT career:

  • Problem Solving

The ability to troubleshoot and problem solve is important for any professional who maintains, repairs, and manages computer or network systems. Sometimes you’ll be required to think outside the box to figure out solutions.

  • Communication

Sometimes you’ll have to communicate with other people or clients (in person, email, phone) so clear communication is key. You will know the language and terminology of what you’re working on or what the problem is, but people will want you to explain what is going on in verbiage they can understand.

  • Creativity

This one isn’t as obvious as the others and not a necessity, but you could certainly benefit. Your job may require you to find innovative solutions to improve processes. Just think, what if Steve Jobs hadn’t been creative? We wouldn’t have Apple. Having an open mind and not so focused on the job at hand is a good way to get those creative juices flowing.

  • Organization

Many IT careers are robust, so being organized will make you more productive and efficient. Multitasking is an important skill, but you can’t multitask effectively without being organized. Prioritize those responsibilities and your time management will come naturally.
